Did You Know that a Vegan Diet is Very Effective for Diabetics?
Dr. Alberto Donzelli, the ASL in Milano, Italy, suggests a vegan diet for those with diabetes.
This strategy was born from a scientific study that divided 100 patients (“assisted person” according to a new definition, which I consider absolutely ridiculous) affected by diabetes in two groups of 50. The first group followed the guidelines of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) with a diet consisting of 15-20% of calories from protein, less than 7% from saturated fat, and 60-70% from carbohydrates and monounsaturated fat, for a total of 500-1000 calories daily.
The second group followed an integrated vegan diet with Vitamin B12, comprised of 65% or more calories from carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, 20% fat and 15% protein. This diet “was based on vegetables, fresh fruit and dry oil, integral cereals and vegetables, with a bit of oil added.
Everyone was allowed to drink alcohol – one drink per day for women and two for men.”
From every perspective, the vegan diet was the winner. The superiority of the vegan model, in fact, was realized in 67% of those following a vegan diet versus 44% of the patients who followed the ADA diet, with weight loss achieved at six pounds versus four pounds. Moreover, the vegan diet allowed for a sharp reduction of anti-diabetic medicine (43% vegan versus 26% ADA), a major reduction of LDL cholesterol (23% versus 11%), and glycated hemoglobin (1.48% versus 0.81%).
Though “vegan dog” may seem a contradiction in terms since they are obviously forced to eat as their owners dictate, many seemed to feel good on this diet, so why not try it before a disease becomes serious?
In the vegetarian diet, it’s necessary to pay close attention to the mixture of plant proteins to ensure inclusion of all necessary amino acids, so as not to risk a nutritional deficit.
